Horse Riding in Colombia

Horse riding in Colombia is nowhere near as popular as it should be. From the endless plains of Los Llanos to the stunning views of Cocora to the slow-paced but scenic rides in Tayrona, there’s plentiful opportunities that are rarely taken advantage of.

Horses near Villaviciencio Los LanosThe best place for horse riding is Los Llanos. Cowboys roam the area like the Argentinian Gauchos, cattle herding and swigging Aguardiente daily. It’s the most atmospheric place to ride by far, and can be enjoyed by travelling just 4 hours from Bogotá. We recommend staying in a finca and roaming the plains with a local expert in order to get the full cowboy experience.

Another place you can enjoy horse riding is the area surrounding Popayan. Again, as is the norm in Colombia, the scenery is breathtaking and you can even carry on to San Agustin where amazing rides await you to go from one archeological site to another.

A place little known for horseback riding, but that boasts a great deal of potential, is Cocora Valley, where you can rent a horse for the day from a local tour operator and enjoy the stunning scenery. All hotels or hostels in Salento can help you organise the trip.

If you’re a horse enthusiast, there are a number of festivals every year that include processions of horses. The most famous of these is the Medellín Feria de Las Flores, which takes place in July. Another option is the Feria de Cali, which runs from December 25th to 31st.
