Volunteering in Colombia

Volunteering in ColombiaVolunteering is never the easiest thing to do. It’s costly, challenging and surprisingly competitive. It’s also hugely rewarding and has great benefits later in life - not only in terms of self-fulfilment but career-wise, too.

Volunteering in Colombia is a great option, since it’s a country of warm, hard-working people as well as crippling poverty. As with many developing nations, the gap between rich and poor is growing and unemployment rates in more vulnerable areas are disturbingly high. There are many things you can do to help curb this trend (if only a little).

The most popular, of course, is language teaching. English is in huge demand in world markets and, unfortunately, English language teaching in less fortunate communities is pretty much of a bad quality across the board. This limits opportunities later in life since, for one, Colombian universities place a great importance on students’ abilities in English.

Teaching opportunities range from simple conversational projects to 12-month contracts in schools. Often they will require your own funding, so be sure to plan well in advance.

Helping Colombian People

Other volunteering opportunities exist working for NGOs in the bigger cities, where you can work with organisations trying to improve the lives of locals. Most of these openings require at least intermediate level Spanish and possibly some experience working for NGOs. Do your research and you should find some openings.

It is possible to find some opportunities for short-term volunteering in Colombia, and one of the best we have come across is based in Medellin offering support to one of the displaced local communities up in the mountains. ´Angeles de Medellin´ offers free English lessons each day to the adults of the Regalo de Dios community, as well as a place for the children to learn and play with eductational computer games, puzzles, football and softball.

The focus here is on having fun and even if you are only available for a day all help is welcomed.
