Barranquilla Overview

Barranquilla Metropolitan Cathedral at NightBarranquilla is the 4th largest city in Colombia with around 1.2 million inhabitants. It is located by the Caribbean sea between Cartagena and Santa Marta, next to the Delta of the Magdalena river.

Barranquilla's name comes from the canyons that existed in the sector adjacent to the Magdalena. During the Spanish colonization, the name "barranca" was common in coastal communities (Barranca Nueva, Barranca Vieja etc).
