The place where the Rio Magdalena joins the Carribean Sea offers an amazing spectacle, Bocas de Cenizas (literally the mouths of ashes).
To allow access to the port of Barranquilla, embankments were built making room for freight railroad on a tiny fringe of land. The train now hosts tourists who can enjoy a very peculiar landscape and beautiful sunsets.
There are 2 ways to enjoy the ride to Las Bocas de Cenizas:
Do it yourself
Take the route 40 (taxi is preferable) and head to Barrio Las Flores where you can board on the train using independent operators. run out to Las Bocas de Cenizas.
The Tren Ecoturístico de las Flores
The trip is 45 minutes one way and the train departs near the old Aduana building. In the high season, Cajacopi runs its train almost everyday but check with Cajacopi as tracks were under repair when we were there.Train fares are around $50-$70 depending on number of people and includes lunch and tour guides.
