La Macarena Neighborhood in Bogotá

La Macarena is one of Bogotá most up and coming neighborhoods and a hive for intellectual and artistic activity. The area is home to many foreigners and artists who choose to live in the area thanks to its spectacular views of the city and because of the buzzing café, pub and restaurant scene. There are also plenty of bohemian shops and a couple of art galleries, making a trip to La Macarena well worth your time

La Macarena is located between Carrera 3 and 5, and between Calles 26 and 30, up from the Plaza de Toros. It's a 30 minute walk from La Candelaria. It's a relatively safe neighborhood but the streets around can be a bit dark, we recommend a taxi to go or leave the area at night.

La Jugueteria from the Outside in La MacarenaThe selection of restaurants is notable for its international flavor. In La Macarena you can find Italian, Mexican, Arabic, British, German, Argentinean, French, and even Serbian cuisine. Your meal can range from the expensive bites you’ll find in the French and Italian restaurants on Cra. 4a # 29, to the cheaper and more cheerful flavors in Mona Pizza (Cra. 4a # 26).

=> Our big recommendations for restaurants are the always-popular La Hamburgueseria (Cra, 4a # 29); the kitsch La Jugueteria (Cra. 4a # 28); cheap delicious pizza at Wilder’s (Cra. 4 # 26); authentic Mexican flavors at La Verdad (Cra. 4a # 29); tango and great beefs at Aires Argentinos, and for a delicious and quite affordable lunch menu Criollos y Chapetones. Such is the nature of the competition here, however, you’re sure to have a great meal wherever you go.

There are two major pubs for you to check out: the ubiquitous Bogotá Beer Company (Cra. 4a # 29) and the new Cervezeria Irlandesa (Cra. 4a # 28). Nearby these you’ll find some delightful cafes for you to while away your time in.

For your slice of Bogotá’s art scene in the area, check the only phot gallery of Bogota: Gallery MU.

=> La Macarena might not be where you want to spend the night if you’re looking for the creme de la creme of Bogotá’s nightlife, but it’s the perfect spot for a quiet night or a date.
