It was erected to celebrate 50 years of peace after the War of the Thousand Days. Although the war ended in 1902, it was on the 25th of October 1953, 51 years later, that the monument was officially opened as a sanctuary in the heart of Cerro Los Cristales.

Cristo Rey Statue CaliThe statue was initially designed by the artist Gerardo Navia. Due to a lack of money, it was terminated by Alideo Tazzioli, an Italian sculptor who came in Cali in the 30s. After four years of intense work, the figure was accomplished. it weights 464 tons and rise to 26 feet, 4 less than the Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro.
