Cartagena Bars and Clubs

Cartagena does not have such an active nightlife compared to cities like Bogotá or Medellín. Go there around the weekend to make sure you get a piece of the action as it could be quiet during the week.

Most places to go out are located in El Centro Historico or in Getsemaní, it's safe but remember to stay aware and in control.

For something different, get on a bus with a bunch of people, play loud music, drink rum and see the city at night, welcome to a Chiva Tour, Colombia's party buses!

Bars and Clubs in El Centro
There are 2 recommended places for a fresh beer in the center. Cafe del Mar on the city walls and Donde Fidel near Torre del Reloj. And for the best cocktails in town, go to El Baron for a Margarita or a Gin Basil Smash.

For clubs, try Tu Candela next to the Torre del Reloj or Fragma for electronic music.

Bars and Clubs in Getsemaní

For a fresh beer, try La Casa de la Cerveza on the walls of the city or just walk down the Calle Arsenal to find a bar that suits. For salsa, your best option is Cafe Havana. You can try as well the nearby Quiebra Canto. On Friday or Saturday, Mister Babilla is another great option and a popular destination for backpackers.

To hang out with Cartagena's society Bazurto Social Club is the place to be.

=> Locals tend to stay in groups so it's probably better to get your own group if you want to go clubbing. Men, as gringos, expect to be the target of prostitution wherever you go in El Centro. People go out late, don't expect much action before 11pm.

GOING OUT IN BOCAGRANDE
.........................................................................................................................................

It's more authentic and free of the oppressive street vendors that are in El Centro. We were advised by our cab driver to go to Bareke but we unfortunately could not get in because of "la politica del patron". I don't think they have anything against gringos but it was frustrating to make the journey from El Centro and not get in. The bar next door looked great so we tried our luck there, but this time apparently the bar was full, grrrrr.

We kept our cool and ended up in a lounge bar round the corner called  "852", (http://2night.com/costa/guide/153396/852-bar-lounge) a lounge bar. That is cheap, filled with students and local people. Definitely a great place to spend a Saturday night, that's the kind of reward you get for persevering.
