Cartagena Transportation

If you stay within the city walls of Cartagena, your best option is to walk the streets even at night unless you opt for a romantic ride on one of the horse-drawn carriagesAnother unusual way to visit the city is to take a Chiva party bus at night.

For the rest, here are some advice to navigate the city and its surroundings.

Taxis in Cartagena
.........................................................................................................................................

Consider a taxi if your destination is close by. For example if you go to Bocagrande, Manga or some of our off the beaten tracks destinations

Taxis are cheap if you stay in the metropolitan area of Cartagena, to pay between 6,000 to 10,000 COP if you stay in Cartagena. The minimum charge as of January 2015 is 6,000 COP.

=> Double check the price at the beginning as taxis don't have meters. Also consider calling a taxi rather than catching one on the streets even if Cartagena is relatively safe.

=> Tappsi, a phone app (available in English) is now in Cartagena, it is the best and safest way to get a taxi in Cartagena http://tappsi.co

Other taxi numbers: Centro Taxis S.A + 57 5 674-2400, Estación de taxis Aeropuerto de Crespo + 57 (5) 666-4206, Radio Taxis Cartagena + 57 (5) 677-0100, Rapitaxi ejecutivo + 57 (5) 664-4444

The Transcaribe in Cartagena

Based on the Transmilenio of Bogota, Cartagena recently started making ways to the Transcaribe, the integrated transportation system of Cartagena with articulated buses. The large blue buses operate the main routes and are complemented by the green buses (alimentadores) that run throughout the rest of the city.

These attractions have a Trancaribe stop : Convento de la Popa, San Felipe de Barajas o Mercado Bazurto.

You need to get a card and charge it first. You can one card and use it for several people. Each trip costs 1,600 COP.

Busetas
.........................................................................................................................................

These mini-buses are in every city in Colombia and they are all the same: cheap, fun, authentic and at times dangerous. Unless you know the city, it is very difficult to identify where they go and via which route. They are 35 routes all over the city, the buses are privetly owned and a trip costs 1,400 COP.

=> A good option if you speak Spanish and carry very little with you.
