Honda

Honda from the Navarro Bridge

For many people, the experience of Honda isn’t one they’re aching to repeat. This is because the city is a stop off for buses from Bogota to Medellin, and the Honda they see is a desolate road that seems to lead to nowhere. Fortunately, these people are largely mistaken. Honda homes beautiful colonial architecture reflecting its glorious past and is nestled comfortably on the Magdalena River, affording the city spectacular views of one of Colombia’s most important rivers.

Calles Las Trampas HondaVisting Las Trampas or walking on the Navarro bridge, you really get a sense of the wealth and importance of Honda in the first part of the 20th century. Honda was the main port on the Magdalena river with goods from Barranquilla being offloaded in Honda before starting their journey to Bogota, all because of a big drop in the river making it impossible for large ships to continue their route. With the development of rail and the multiplication of routes, Honda slowly lost its economic power and its grandeur faded away.

Honda is also called "the City of Bridges" (with more than 25 of them crossing the rivers Magdalena, Gualí or Guarinó), or the "City of Peace" as it escaped most of La Violencia in the 1950s.

Honda is really hot all year long so if you plan to stay there for a night or two, opt for a place with a swiming pool.

Honda's main festival is called Carnaval de la Subienda and takes place in the beginning of February when the trouts go upriver and make it an easy catch for the local fishermen. Expect a few days of parties, lots of aguardiente and the usual election of the local beauty queen.

Honda Alto del Rosario

Honda is really off the tourism trail and makes it for a really nice romantic destination with its colonial center.

The best thing to do in Honda is to go for a walk from the Alto de Rosario neighboorhood where you will find the Nuestra Señora del Rosario Cathedral. Down from there, head to the Plaza de Mercado for a glass of Salpicón (freshly diced fruits in a juice) and then visit Las Trampas. Las Trampas are a combination of zigzag streets with beautiful houses built in the architectural style of the Spanish colonial era.

Entrance to the Navarro BridgeOther things to visit include the Puente de Navarro, the oldest iron bridge in South America, which offers beautiful views of the Magdalena river. And if you are in town for a few days, learn about the city at the Museo del Río Magdalena. For families, the aquatic park Agua, Sol y Alegría with its 7 swimming pools is a good option to cool off during the extremly hot afternoons. The park is located at the entrance of the city, it costs 21,000 COP for the day for adults and 16,000 COP for kids until 8 (http://www.aguasolalegria.com)
