Los Cerros de Mavecure, the "crying rocks"

A one and a half hour boat ride from Puerto Inírida will take you to one of the most spectacular sites we have ever seen in Colombia but also in the world: Los Cerros de Mavecure.

The Cerros de Mavecure are the remains of the oldest mountains in Latin America and are giant rocks uprising from the jungle. The main rocks are Mavecure, Pajarito, Mono and the Cerro del Diablo. You can climb most of them and get an amazing view of the surrounding jungle and rivers.

Cerros de Mavecure, Arriving by BoatLos Cerros are some giant granite monoliths of burgundy colors sliced with quartz veins. If you are lucky and it rains (we know it sounds weird) you will have the impression the rocks are crying. It is because of the waterfalls created through water accumulation in the vegetation spread on the rocks, needless to say this is absolutely mind blowing.

=> We recommend to visit the site in the summer (december-February) as the river will then be at its lowest, revealing hundreds of white sand beaches falling into the black (and very clean) waters. You should avoid the rainy season in September-October and in April-May.

ATTRACTIONS, VISITS AND ACTIVITIES
.........................................................................................................................................

The best activity is to climb one of the rocks (Mavecure or El Diablo) to have impressive views of the forest and the rivers around. Also, when you climb the small rock (masiso) in front of Vitina, you can see the also famous rocks located in Venezuela called Cipapo Yacapara.

=> Be careful if climbing one of the rocks. If it looks like it's going to rain, get back down quickly as the rock will get slippery as a soap! We had the bad fortune to experience that and got some nasty cut in our hands out of it…

Off2 Colombia, Monkey, GuainiaAnother great activity is to swim next to the white sanded beaches created by the rivers. If the water is low, you will have plenty of beaches to enjoy and swim from. If the water is high, you will have less beaches but you will have the opportunity to swim in the middle of the flooded forest, litterally swimming from one brand to another!

=> A great place for swimming is Caño Vitina.

If you have a bit of time, you should try to You can also trek and then climb to Cerro El Pajarito or enjoy fishing your own diner at the Raudal El Remanso. Other destinations nearby are the Raudal (river torrent) de Samuro and the raudal de Chorrobocon.

Another reason to visit the Cerros de Mavecure (like if there was a need for it!) is to learn about the indian communities of El Remanso and learn about the culture of the Puinaves.
