La Estrella Fluvial del Sur (the star river of the South) is the convergence of 3 of the biggest rivers in Colombia : Atabapo, Guaviare and Orinoco. The place is impressive and magic with each river carrying a different color.

Near there lies the Venezuelan city of San Fernando de Atabapo.

There's also an old army settlement serving as a stop for a night's accomodation on your way to the PNN Tuparro and the Raudales de Maipures.

SIGHTS AND ACTIVITIES

The site is spectacular, make sure to go there early if you come from Puerto Inirida to enjoy the magnifiscent sunrise.

It is also a really good spot to swim in the black water of the Orinoco river and enjoy the natural beaches formed by the rivers during the dry season.

=> Chemically, blackwater rivers are very low in dissolved minerals with very acidic, almost sterile water. For this reason, blackwater rivers are considered some of the cleanest natural waters, the water chemistry of blackwater also inhibits the proliferation of insect larvae and therefore larger animals like piranhas or anacondas.

ACCOMMODATION

There's an abandoned army base which makes a perfect shelter for camping by the river Orinoco. A few more years back, the site used to be a hotel, a rather ambitious project at the time considering there are still today only a handlful of people reaching this area every year.

You can also spend a bit of time in the Venezuelan town of San Fernando de Atabapo, there's not much there outside of a nice square and posters of Chavez.

GETTING THERE / PRICES

You are likely to get there as part of a tour to the Raudales de Maipures. La Estrella Fluvial del Sur and San Fernado de Atabapo are about 2 hours away from Puerto Inirida. It costs around 30,000 Pesos one way to get there by boat.
