Coalmine El Cerrejón
El Cerrejón is the biggest open pit coalmine in the world. In this private complex, located in the Barrancas locality, 32 millions of tons are exploited yearly.
Although it is not a tourist attraction itself, it’s a very interesting place to visit if you’re interested in getting to know deeply the functioning of this king of mining, the working conditions of their over 5.000 employees, the environmental impact that this activity has in La Guajira and their Social Responsibility program.

The Enterprise promotes its own tourism activities, which consist in a two hours tour around the mine, with a specialized guide. They also have a Visitor Center where you can find handcrafts, beverages, food and, if it’s coordinated it in advanced, a complete lunch for tourists.
Prices: 16.000 pesos per person, 12.000 pesos for students.

You can schedule your visit with them directly or arrange a tour in Riohacha. The distance to the mine is an hour and a half aprox.
