Jardin

Jardin Main SquareJardín is yet another one of those wonderful small colonial towns in Colombia that makes you think you’ve stepped back in time when you arrive. If anything Jardín is a little more off the tourist route than Guatape and Sante Fe, perhaps due to the fact that the 3.5 hour journey from Medellin makes going there a lot of travelling for just a day trip.

If you do make the visit however you’ll be rewarded with beautifully preserved and picturesque buildings, stunning green countryside and friendly locals.

When looking for activities in Jardín it´s best to take a leaf out of the locals book; relax, drink coffee, enjoy the atmosphere and do as little as possible.

Jardin Main Square

The Main Plaza is one of the most beautiful you´ll see in Colombia, with both the plaza and the cathedral declared as national monuments. Numerous cafes line the plaza and with colourful tables and chairs set out it`s the perfect place to sit and watch the world go by.

If you`re after more than just people watching then Jardín offers some beautiful scenery for you to explore either on foot or by horse.

One of the most popular hikes you can do is to ´La Cueva del Esplendor´, which is about 3 hours from the town centre. The main feature is a ray of light in the form of a waterfall coming through the roof which really is a sight to behold. The hike down to the cave is not easy and so we advise to go with a guide, either by taking a tour by horse or by booking to rappel down the waterfall (35,000 pesos).

Waterfalls near Jardin AntioquiaTo get a more spectacular view of Jardin there are several options available. Paragliding is offered by various companies from the nearby hills (approximately 80,000 pesos) and there is also a cable car where for 5,000 pesos you can be taken up to the Christ monument for views of the town.

For a slightly more nerve-racking experience try taking ´La Garrucha´ on the other side of the town, a cable car of the old fashioned wooden variety where for 3,500 pesos you are pulled across a ravine with views of the river below.

At the top there is a great lookout point where you can find your feet again before taking the ride back down.

The Museo Clara Rojas located in the main plaza is home to a small museum containing paintings and artifacts from the history of the town; for a donation you receive a warm welcome and personal tour which only takes about 15 minutes.

For those with a sweet tooth it´s worth a trip to La Casa del Dulce on Calle 13, where you are spoilt for choice with a delicious variety of sweets and marmalades which make a great gift… or snack for your next long-distance bus journey!
