Providencia and Santa Catalina

Providencia, on Santa CatalinaOld Providence Island (or Isla Providencia) retains a lot more of the Creole culture than San Andres. Mass tourism has not yet hit and as such you can enjoy a much more unspoilt and tranquil experience there.  The island is one of the best locations in Colombia for scuba diving and makes a great destination for unwinding and getting a bit of rest & relaxation.

Crab Kay ProvidenciaOne of the top attractions here is known as Crab Key, part of the national park in Providencia that boasts the 3rd largest coral reef in the world. The tiny island is located off the East coast of Providencia and you can walk to the top to see what is called the "Seven Colours of the Sea".

As in San Andres, Providencia offers world class diving and snorkeling with its 35kms reef barrier. The 2 best spot for diving in Providencia are Tete's place and Manta's place.

You can also take boat tours around the 20km of Providencia coast from Aguadulce. Morgan’s Head (a huge rock formation which resembles a human head) is located just off Santa Catalina. Santa Catalina itself is well worth a trip and there is some amazing snorkeling there. Walk across the "Lover´s Bridge" between Providencia and Santa Catalina at sunset for beautiful photos and spotting spotted sting rays.

Diving in ProvidenciaThere is some great wildlife in Providencia; lots of iguanas, birds and black crabs that live in the mountains. In May time the crabs migrate to the ocean and the local road is even closed with the aid of military protection to help them survive the journey! It is also possible to trek El Pico, the highest peak in Providencia. A guide to go hiking will cost you around 30K pesos per person and takes about 3-4 hours return.

There are two traditional sports that can be found in Providencia; the first being local horse racing which takes place every 2 weeks on the beach. The second is cock fighting where gambling takes place on which bird will survive the violent encounter – not one for the animal lovers.
