Cumbal Volcano

The Cumbal volcano lays at 4764m and is the most active volcano in Colombia. Located in Nariño, you can see its majesty from nearby Pasto

Cumbal VolcanoThe site was also the scene of a plane crash in 2002 where 92 persons died, source of many ghost stories… There are 2 craters: ice and sulphur.

You can sleep in the the sulphur “azufral” crater if you bring your own tent. Sleeping the crater of an active volcano, maybe something to add to your bucket list!

The walk to the crater is about 6 hours and get pretty steep towards the end. It is impressing to witness the local indigenous climbing the top of Cumbal everyday to collect and sell sulphur.

=> The place is humid and cold, you need proper walking shoes and mountain clothes to get there.

How to reach Cumbal?
..........................................................................................................................................

Take a bus to Guachucal, the second highest city in Colombia (3285m) then a taxi to Cumbal. It is a nice small town with a food market at the weekend.  From there, negotiate with a local taxi driver to take you to the last house on the way to the volcano. It is an unpaved road so taxi always asked for quite a sum (30,000COP). No accomodation there, just ask to stay at someone's house for a small fee or bring your tent. They can also sort out a guide for you (40/50,000 COP/day). You can also rent a mule for 50,000 COP/day
