Sometimes compared to the Easter island, the archeological park of San Agustin is certainly not as famous but never the less almost as impressive. As its big sister, the UNESCO'S World Heritage site remains a mystery and a captivating visit to anybody interested in history and archeology.
San Agustin offers a spectacular scenery and a perfect playgrounds for all sorts of sports and activities including trekking, horse-ridding or rafting. While San Agustin is the main archeological site of Colombia, you can also visit Tierradento, the other archeological gem of Colombia located in the Cauca Department closer to Cali. Tierradentro includes more than 100 elaborate underground tombs as well as spectacular scenery. The other impressive archeological site in Colombia and one of the best things to do when visiting the country is the Lost City in the Sierra Nevada near Santa Marta.

We still know very little about the Pre-Columbian tribes who erected these impressive statues... Carbon dating place them between 555 BC and 1630 AD. they are representing animals or masked monsters. There have been comparisons made with the Mayans statues of Central America without any direct link. Even if we know little about the tribes, it seems that women were very important in San Agustin, they were often treated as superior and many of them were even leading the groups.
