Undoubtedly the most popular sport in Colombia is football.
Not only is football the countries national sport, it’s the only one that really grabs the attention of the bulk of the population and is watched in group situations.

The Colombian Football Team, Old School Colombia’s football league doesn’t rival Argentina or Brazil’s for quality, but it remains a competitive and entertaining league nonetheless. Their national team achieved a small amount of success and notoriety in the mid-90s.

Another sport very popular in Colombia is cycling, which attracts a dedicated following in Colombia and many cyclists from around the world who come to the country to cycle the remarkable routes found throughout the country.

Professional Cycling in Colombia gained a dedicated following after Martín Emilio Rodríguez achieved a great amount of success in European cycling competitions. Following Rodríguez’s success a later generation came through, including Luis Herrera, Fabio Parra, Víctor Huge Peña, Luis Felipe Laverde and Mauricio Soler.

Other sports that are rising in popularity in Colombia include boxing, baseball, basketball, table tennis and even rugby, which enjoys a small amount of popularity in the country’s major cities such as Bogotá.

In addition to these imported sports, Colombia has its own sport known as Tejo. It’s a game that revolves around throwing a weighted object at a clay stand dotted with gunpowder. An accurate shot will result in a loud bang and more points being added to your tally. Tejo isn’t exactly strenuous but it’s a great sport to enjoy drinking with friends.
