History Lost City

The Tayronas originally come from Central America and sailed to the coast near Santa Marta about around the 6th century. Fierce warriors, they defeated the local tribes who fled to the coast (including the Wayuus who now populate La Guajira) and established themselves as the dominant force in the Santa Marta mountains.

When the Spaniards came in the 16th century, the Tayronas had developed into an outstanding civilisation based on a complex social and political system.

Terraces at the Lost City, Tayrona
Due to the rugged topography of the Sierra Nevada
and thanks to their engineering skills, the Tayronas created a network of villages linked from one to the other via stoned paths and stairways.

Among the 300 settlements identified
, Tayrona (the Ciudad Perdida or Lost City) was the main urban centre with 2,000 to 2,500 families and El Pueblito, which can be accessed from Parque Tayrona, was their main centre for commerce..

The Tayronas were the first advanced indigenous tribe the Spaniards met in the New World in 1499 and the first time they came across gold in South America. The myth of El Dorado was born and their quench for the golden stuff would have devastating consequences on the lives of millions of indigenous tribes in South America.

The Tayronas defended themselves bravely during 75 years of uninterrupted war and their fate finally came to an end. Their civilization lives on when you walk on these terraces.

Did you know?

The Lost Tigers

A few years back, the Zoo of Barranquilla was touring the region and a truck carrying African tigers crashed. The tigers ran away and the locals say they managed to acclimatize and reproduce on the hospitable slopes of the Santa Marta mountains!

We could not find out if this is a legend or based on true events but hey what a story to tell. Watch out and let us know if you see the Santa Marta tigers.

Lost City - The Enemy!

You might think that Snakes, Pumas, Scorpions or even Tigers are the dangerous ones on your way to Ciudad Perdida, but don't be fooled... your worst enemy there will be... THE MOSQUITO!

In the Lost City, the vicious insect won't bite you, it will literally pump liters of blood out of your body, leave you 100s of stings that will wake you up in the middle of the night in terrible pain. And as a beautiful goodbye gift, your legs, feet and arms will wear ugly scars that will take weeks to go away.

So, as a flamethrower might be a little heavy to put in your bag, you will have to find the right repellent and never EVER leave parts of your body unprotected.
