Recommendations Lost City

A lot of people asked us how difficult the trek was, if they could manage it, if it was dangerous. Here a few answered questions to make up your own mind.

..........................................................................................................................................

Is it tough?

No, the trek can be done in 6 days which would mean that you would walk an average of 4/5 hours a day. You can still struggle on some of the climbs but if you are aged between 15 to 60 and in good health, the trek itself should be fine. You will be wet most of the time so that can add to the overall difficulty.

.........................................................................................................................................

Is it dangerous?

Yes but some of the trails are narrow and falling is not an option. Some animals (mainly snakes) can also be a hazard. Follow the guides' advice and you will be fine. we have heard about accidents, 95% of them related to people taking unnecessary risks, like people doing backflips over the river where there's not enough water, or people deliberately touching a poisonous snakes to impress other people...

Is it safe, will I be kidnapped?

The paramilitaries handed over their guns in 2005/2006 and the army controls 100% of the area, you will be safe from political trouble. A group was kidnapped in the early 2000 but no one was killed and Colombia was a completely different country at the time.

What should I bring?

Follow our checklist for a perfect backpack.

Did you know?

The Lost Tigers

A few years back, the Zoo of Barranquilla was touring the region and a truck carrying African tigers crashed. The tigers ran away and the locals say they managed to acclimatize and reproduce on the hospitable slopes of the Santa Marta mountains!

We could not find out if this is a legend or based on true events but hey what a story to tell. Watch out and let us know if you see the Santa Marta tigers.

Lost City - The Enemy!

You might think that Snakes, Pumas, Scorpions or even Tigers are the dangerous ones on your way to Ciudad Perdida, but don't be fooled... your worst enemy there will be... THE MOSQUITO!

In the Lost City, the vicious insect won't bite you, it will literally pump liters of blood out of your body, leave you 100s of stings that will wake you up in the middle of the night in terrible pain. And as a beautiful goodbye gift, your legs, feet and arms will wear ugly scars that will take weeks to go away.

So, as a flamethrower might be a little heavy to put in your bag, you will have to find the right repellent and never EVER leave parts of your body unprotected.
