Medellín Off the Beaten Tracks

Medellín is a metropolis of 3.5 million people with little gems to be discovered and some controversial activities and visits.

First, and the most controversial of them all, the Pablo Escobar tours which take you to places where the famous vilain lived and died. It is certainly not to the taste of everyone but it does offer some insights about Escobar and Colombia's troubled history of the 80's and 90's.

For something a bit more sedate, head to the Jardin Botanico and have lunch surrounded by plants at the Cafe del Bosque. For a fresh day outside of the city, hike to Santa Elena and enjoy some blueberry wine or some local organic red.

In the evening, head to the relaxing Parque Carlos E. Restrepo if you want to hang out with the students and feel the local vibe.

And if you want to push the controverse, finish the night with your loved one in a more daring way at La Gruta de Hierro (the iron grotto!!), one of Medellin's love motels.
