Silvia

Guambianos in SilviaThere is scarcely a foreign tourist to be seen in Silvia, the charming town which lies to the northeast of Popayan, high in the valleys. This makes it a great place to get off-the-beaten tracks and to see parts of Colombia that many never see, nor imagine exists. Silvia looks more like a picture taken from a Bolivian or an Ecuadorian village.

Overview SilviaSilvia is the centered place for the surrounding Guambianos communities. The Guambianos don't live in Silvia but in the small villages around like La Campana, Guambia or Caciques. Guambianos fervently retain their traditional ways of life clothing themselves in disctinct white and blue costume and bowler hats. They speak their own languages and are excellent weavers.

Market Day for the Guambianos, SilviaThe main reason to visit Silvia is to check the market on Tuesdays when Guambianos come to Silvia to sell fruits, vegetables and handicrafts. It is not a market for tourists but the colours and the traditional dresses of the Guambianos make it a great sight to observe or take photos. The market begins at dawn and goes on until mid-afternoon, it is best visited early in the morning.

=> The Guambianos are out-going and friendly although you should be careful and respectful if photographing them, since many do not appreciate being treated as a ‘sight’.

Church, Uphill in SilviaFor great views of Silvia and the surrounding mountains, walk uphill to the Iglesia de Belen. Another option is to hike outside of town to see more of the Guambiano culture and maybe get a chance to interact with them. Walk or take a bus to La Campana or Guambia.
