Tatacoa El CuscoMost people who visit Tatacoa will be looking to stay the night in the desert. There are a handful of frills-free guesthouses that offer cabañas (from 20,000 Pesos) or hammocks (10,000 Pesos). You can also rent tents, mats and sleeping bags for camping from the observatory (15,000 Pesos).

Our pick goes to Noches de Saturno which has a proper swimming pool to freshen up.

Noches de Saturno
Located near Cusco, Noches de Saturno offers 2 double rooms, single rooms and camping space. The plus is of course the swiming pool. If you don't stay at the Posada, you can pay 5,000 Pesos for the entrance.

There are also a few Posada in the sector of Los Hoyos but what we've seen was really rudimentary, it is a good option to head there if you have camping gear.

For a choice in Villavieja, head to Hotel La Casona or Hotel Villa Paraiso. They have 2 Private rooms and dorms. Prices start 15,000 Pesos for dorms. Comfort is not much better than in the middle of the desert.

Hotel La Casona: Calle 3 - Numero 3-60, on the main square. Tel (8) 879 7636, http://hotellacasonavillavieja.blogspot.com

EATING AND RESTAURANTS
...............................................................................................................................

Los Hoyos TatacoaTourist facilities are fairly limited in the desert; the guesthouses offer standard Colombian meals for dinner at reasonable prices (around 9-10,000 Pesos) - you may also find the local specialty of goat on the menu. Snacks, drinks and hot tamales are available from the observatory – you can also try cactus sweets and even cactus wine!

There are also a few restaurants in Villavieja. One option is Sol y Sombra which does breakfast, lunch, diner with a  main meal around 6-7,000 Pesos. They also do ice creams. Cr 4 5-86 La Portada, Tel: (+57 8) 879 7582

GETTING THERE
...............................................................................................................................

El Cusco Tatacoa DesertPay attention, because getting to Desierto Tatacoa requires a bit of work. Whether you are coming from the North or the South, your first port of call will be to Neiva. From Bogota the journey is about 5 hours and shoud cost you around 25,000 Pesos. From San Augustin the journey and costs are about the same, though you´ll first need to take a collectivo to Pitalito terminal to pick up the bus to Neiva.

From Neiva you can then jump in a collectivo bus (6,000 Pesos) that´ll take you to VillaVieja.  As you take the hour long journey you´ll start to notice the scenery change; it´s a great road and a lot of fun if you´re sitting in the back of the truck! Some buses might even drop in the desert or at the accomodation of your choice.

=> Take the number of the bus driver, that might be useful if you want to come back earlier, we found the different hostels-B&Bs not always very helpful.

Arriving at Los HoyosAs soon as you arrive in VillaVieja it´s likely you'll be offered a mototaxi to make the final leg to the desert.  This only takes about 15 minutes but costs 15-20,000 Pesos, so try and see if you can share the journey.
