Rafting in Colombia

Rafting on the Rio Suarez near San Gil

Colombia is a new world-class playground for rafting. With 3 mountain ranges and a very wet climate, Colombia has the potential to become the rafting capital of South America.

.........................................................................................................................................
=> There are 3 great rafting areas in Colombia, one near Bogota, one in San Gil - Santander, and another one in San Agustín - Huila. Altogether, you have 4 rivers where you can practice rafting with difficulties running from level II to level V. We met Glenn Goodrich, a very experienced river guide from the US, who kindly shared his experience on the rivers below.

The Rio Fonce and the Rio Suarez in San Gil, Santander

Rafting Colombia, in your face!A 7 hour bus ride will get you to San Gil, the adventure capital of Colombia where you have 2 options: the Rio Fonce or the mighty Rio Suarez.

=> The Fonce is a ten kilometer run with rapids up to class III.
..........................................................................................................................................

The river starts out with its biggest rapid, a long series of Class III rapids. This river is great for beginners and with the trip ending right in the town of San Gil the entire run takes about two hours, which gives you plenty of time for another activity in the same day. For a more exciting trip on the Fonce it can be done on a hydrospeed. A guide in a kayak will lead you down the river as you follow on a river board.

For those wanting a real challenge, the Rio Suarez is one of the best runs in South America also out of San Gil. Colombia Rafting is the primary outfitter on this world class run featuring class V rapids. The river is action packed for the 16 kilometers, starting with class III and ending with the class V Surprise Rapid, a rapid with huge ocean sized waves that can flip a raft. Mid way through the run is the most challenging rapid, called Labyrinth. Upper Labyrinth is class IV immediately followed by the class V Lower Labyrinth. Colombia Rafting guides are the best in Colombia, most are on the Colombia national rafting team.
