San Francisco and El Jardin Encantado

The Jardin Encantado, literally the enchanted garden, is a countryside house located in the town of San Francisco.

The owner has cultivated her garden in order to attract hundreds of hummingbirds and you can stand right amongst them. Out of the 147 recorded species of hummingbirds in Colombia, 23 of them can be find there including 2 endemic species.

This place is a point of reference for ornithologists, photographers, environmentalists and nature lovers. It costs 12,000 COP to enter the garden.

View from the square, San FranciscoThe town of San Francisco is lovely and attracts Bogotanos at the weekend with its charming location and warm weather. There is nice walk to go to the Alto de la Virgen (1h to go back and forth) which offers nice views of the surrounding mountains. On your way back, try the Quijote restaurant, they have a menu for 10,000 COP, they also serve trouts, the specialty of the region.

There are some horse-riding facilities in town as well (from 25,000 COP).

=> It is a great idea to spend the weekend in San Francisco, we suggest you stay slightly outside of town at Agualinda, a nice and relaxing ecolodge.

..........................................................................................................................................

Map to San Francisco CundinamarcaSan Francisco is located at 50 kms northwest of Bogota, its takes about 90 minutes from Bogota by car.

There are very few buses going direct to San Francisco. You are more likely to catch a bus to La Vega or Villeta that can drop you near San Francisco (about 8,000/9,000 COP), then you can catch a mini-bus to the center of town (2,000 COP). You can catch buses in Bogota at the Terminal de Bus de Salitre or on Calle 80 between Av. Boyacá and Puente Río Bogotá (you will have to hail the bus).

If you are rich and in a hurry, a taxi will charge you about 200.000 for a return trip with an hour or two to spare over there.
