Zipaquira and the Salt Cathedral

Zipaquira is located just 1 hour away from Bogotá and is very easy to get to if you’re in the Colombian capital. It’s most famous for its Salt Cathedral, which draws thousands of tourists every week.

The city itself is a charming, colonial settlement with a population of around 70,000. It has a pretty main plaza and church that can be explored before or after your visit to the salt mines, where you can enjoy a good meal in one of the many cafes and restaurants.

From Zipaquira it’s also possible to head to the beautiful Guatavita lake, you can find taxis in Bogotá that will take you to both in a day for less than $200,000. If you have more time, we strongly advice to spend one day in Zipaquira, sleep there and then head to Guatavita the day after.

Aside from wandering through the city, the real reason you must come to Zipaquira is the aforementioned Zipaquira Salt Cathedral. A huge, sprawling cathedral that features atmospheric lighting and impressive sculptures, it’s a great work of art and a testament to human endeavor.

=> The Cathedral of Salt is meant to mimic the last 13 stages of Jesus’ life, but apart from that is simply a marvel of architecture that really has to be seen to be believed.

There are several packages available at the entrance of the site. We did the basic one plus the Ruta del Minero, it's a bit fake but quite fun for the extra pesos.

To get to the Cathedral, head uphill, it's a 10-15 minute walk from the center.
