Raudales de Maipures OverviewAlmost 200 years ago the German explorer Humbolt was the first expeditioner to brave the tumultuous torrents created by the confluence of the Rio Orinoco and the Rio Tuparro to discover what he would later describe as the 8th wonder of the World: the Raudal de Maipures.

Balancing Rock, Raudales de Maipures

Well, we can't tell if it is the 8th wonder of the World but it definitely is a place of beauty where we felt like true adventurers. The Park Office reported only 20 tourists in 2011...

The Raudal de Maipures is the best attraction of the PNN El Tuparro (Parque Natural Nacional), a reserve of 548,000 located in Vichada in the Llanos Orientales. Streams, torrents, giant rocks and waterfalls form a maelstrom of astonishing beauty.

=> El Parque El Tuparro was created in 1970 and covers 548,000 hectares. The park has 2 main ecosystems : flooded and non-flooded savannas reminiscent of some African films or pictures.

ATTRACTIONS AND ACTIVITIES
.........................................................................................................................................

Hiking to the Raudal de Maipures should be your focus here. It is quite an easy walk (you can also get a bonus lift from a farm truck) from the stop by the river Orinoco with amazing savannah around and several viewing points of the Raudal. Once you get there, head straight to the heart of the torrent and watch the power of nature.

Have a Swim in PNN TuparroThe Raudales de Maipures is a combination of several torrents, streams, waterfalls and giant rocks including the "balancing rock", a giant stone resting miraculously on top of the river after it was lifted there by high waters. The setting is surreal and is exactly as described by Humbolt after his raft made it there 200 years ago.

After taking a few hundred pictures or spent hours meditating, go next to the park office and enjoy a swim by the white sandy beaches of the Rio Orinoco.

=> The current is very strong, be carefull and stay close to the shore

ACCOMMODATION
.........................................................................................................................................

Cabanas for Rent in the PNN TuparroYou cannot camp in the park but there are cabanas available. Unfortunately you cannot cook there and there's no restaurant so you have to bring food to stay there. The agency which organises the tour for you should be able to organise it for you as well as the authorization from the park office.
The cabanas cost 60,000 a night per person but the price is likely to be included in the package you go for.

=> It is a great idea to stay there for the night to enjoy the sunrise over the raudal and the mountains around.

HOW TO GET THERE
.........................................................................................................................................

From what we've experienced, it seems very difficult to make it there on your own as the trip is about 7/8 hours of boat from Puerto Inirida with some several boat changes including one in San Fernando de Atabapo in Venezuela (by the beautiful Estrella Fluvial del Sur).

=> Your best option is to organise yourself with an agency in Bogota like EcoGlobal Expeditions or directly at Puerto Inirida with Toninas Tours.
