Puerto Inírida

The Port, Puerto Inirida

Puerto Inírida is the capital of the Guainía department in the Llanos Orientales de Colombia. It is a likeable little town which operates as the starting point for your trips to the Cerros de Mavecure or the Estrella Fluvial del Sur. Puerto Inirida is also a base for going to Vichada and the amazing PNN Tuparro and the Raudal de Maipures.

There is little to do in Puerto Inírida itself but if you dig a bit there are some great activities to do around town : watching river dolphins, waterskiing and wakeboparding, swimming in the many small coffee coloured rivers (called caños), visiting the nearby indigenous communities or learning about the flower of Inirida.

=> Puerto Inírida is not on any tourist trail and people are some of the friendliest you will meet in Colombia. At night, relax with a few drinks overlooking the port and the river.

Kid in Puerto Inirida

The name of the City of Inírida (or Puerto Inírida) is a tribute to the beautiful Princess Inirida. According to the legend, she got trapped in the rocks of Mavecure following a pain of heart (Love is tough in Guainía :o). It is also the name of the Inírida flower, endemic to the region.

Inírida is located on the borders of Venezuela on the far east of Colombia, along the Rio Inirida. It is the youngest town in Colombia, it was created in 1964.

=> There are 2 festivals worth mentioning: in August, the Festival de las Colonias, in February, the Festival de Verano.

THE FLOWER OF INIRIDA
.........................................................................................................................................

The Winter Flower of IniridaThe flower of Inírida is a beautiful and very unique flower, endemic to one of the oldest regions of the world: Guyana. The flowers are made of solid pins disposed in a helical shape, Colors vary from pale pink to vivid red.

There are 2 types of Inírida flowers: the Winter flower (Guacamaya superba) and the summer flower (Schoenocefalium teretifolium), smaller than the other one. Their eights vary from 50 to 100 cms.

The Summer Flower of IniridaOne of the specificities (on top of their incomparable beauty and uniqueness), is the fact that they can live up to one year (their shades changing over the time) which lead to their exploitation and popularity for decoration.

Unfortunately, some time ago the flower was subjected to indiscriminate and uncontrolled exploitation, which led to the significant decrease of the specie in the area of Guyana. This is now very well controlled and forbidden to pick them.
