Cabo de la Vela

Pilon de Azucar Cabo de la Vela

Cabo de la Vela is the most popular destination in La Guajira because it has one of the most beautiful beaches in Colombia and the acces by land is relatively easy (though not that comfortable). It's located northeast of Riohacha and is surrounded by sea and a desert ecosystem where the Wayuu people have lived for hundreds of years.

We didn't find the village particularly attractive, it is small, very hot and there are not many activities available, but the quietness makes it an ideal place to relax and enjoy the beach.

ATTRACTIONS, VISITS AND ACTIVITIES IN CABO DE LA VELA

In Cabo de la Vela, there are 2 great walks not to be missed: the Pilón de Azúcar and the Faro.

View from the Top of the Pilón de Azúcar

The Pilón de Azúcar is a great hike and is only a one hour walk from Cabo de la Vela. An easy trek we reommend you to do before sunset to enjoy the stunning scenery and the colourmade of colourful shapes and giant cliffs falling into the sea.

The Pilón de Azúcar is a sacred site where the Wayuú communicate with their ancestors. It is for them a place of deep mythological significance. On top of the white rock "Kamaici" sits the statue of the Virgen de Fátima.

KITESURFING IN CABO DE LA VELA

Kite Surf in Cabo de la Vela

Cabo de la Vela offers perfect conditions for all wind sports and especially Kitesurfing: a perfectly flat warm water without waves, a beach made of soft sand where there is lots of room for safety launching and landing. Winds range from 25-35 knots most of the time and the incredible scenery with seas surrounded by deserts are turning Cabo de la Vela as a famous spot for kitesurfers.

There is a "camp" dedicated to kite surfers. You can share hammocks with fellow
kiters there and enjoy life without water (apart from the one you will surf on).

=> We recommend you not to go too extreme while having fun as the nearest hospital is 2 hours away!
