Riohacha

Riohacha is not really a city where you will go for tourism but the basecamp for the organisation of your expeditions in La Guajira.

Here you will find many tour operators taking you to nearby Wildlife Sanctuary Los Flamencos, the Salinas de Manaure, the Valle de los Cangrejos (Crabs Valley), and the Línea Negra (Black Line), a group of sacred places for the indigenous groups of the Sierra Nevada, located around the estuary of the Ranchería River.

=> A truly off the beaten track activity is to visit the coalmine of El Cerrejón, the largest open air coalmine in the world. A good insight into our relentless thirst for energy and its environmental consequences.

With a bit more time, head further north into the desert and visit Cabo de la Vela or the most Northern point in South America, the magicalPunta Gallinas.

Riohacha The MalleconRiohacha is typically the kind of city that could take a totally different dimension if a bit of money was injected in it. The “Malecon” (sidewalk by the see) is especially nice and maybe in a few years, with a bit of work and cleaning it will become a lovely resort, the "Cote d'Azur" of Colombia.

One interesting thing to do if you fancy something "typical" is to visit the massive market on the main square, very colourful and probably the cheapest place to buy socks in Colombia!

A walk by the Malecon, also called 'Paseo de la Marina', will allow you to see different beaches as you observe the beautiful handcrafts that thE Wayuu women offer along the way.

The main Plaza Almirante Padilla is another recommended spot.It is located in the center of the city and locals gather there to watch the sunset in front of the statue of José Prudencio Padilla, a local heroe during the Colombian independence campaign.
