San Andrés

San Andres from AboveSan Andres is a great location for sun, sea and sand which also has a great diversity thanks to the islands multi-ethnic history.

Although some might say San Andres has lost some of its Creole culture under the influence of tourism from the Colombian mainland, the people there still speak Creole English and you´ll hear just as much reggae as you will salsa.  The island is only a short 90 minute flight from mainland Colombia and serves as the gateway to the smaller neighbouring island of Providencia.

VISITS AND ACTIVITIES
..........................................................................................................................................

Sting Ray San AndresApart from lazing around on beaches, San Andres is a great location for snorkeling and reasonable value if you want to go scuba diving at approximately150K Pesos for 2 dives. There are even a couple of shipwrecks (Blue Diamond and Nicaraguense) that you can explore.

It´s easy to walk around the island, but for around 60K Pesos you can hire a moped or a golf cart for the day to see the sights. There’s also a bus tour you can take to get an overview of the island which takes in a visit to El Hoyo Soplador, a sea water geyser on the southern end of San Andres.

Morgan Cave San AndresCaptain Morgan’s cave is an impressive sea cave and a popular attraction to visit, perhaps partly due to the tales of lost treasure being hidden there!

There are 3 islands located just off San Andres which you can visit by taking a boat tour; Jhonny Kay (home to the famous ´Coco Loco´ cocktail), Hay Key and Aquario (or Aquiarium), although all of these islands can get a little crowded with tourists. There are also tours available to go sting-ray spotting; highly recommended as this is a great opportunity to swim and snorkel amongst the stringrays.

The usual watersport activities such as parasailing, wind surfing and kite surfing are also offered in San Andres.

Whilst you´re at San Andres it´s a good opportunity to take advantage of the duty free shopping, especially the Colombian emeralds that are available.
