Capurganá and Sapzurro

Capurganá and Sapzurro are nestled on the border between Colombia and Panama in the region officially known as El Chocó. Although Chocó is associated with the Pacific Coast of Colombia, it holds this narrow piece of paradise.

Capurganá sits between its eponynous Bay (Bahia Capurganá) and some thick jungle offering great hikes with waterfalls and natural swimming pools.

Beach near SapzurroSapzurro is smaller than Capurganá and quieter (keep in mind Capurganá has 2,500 inhabitants...). It’s the final settlement in Colombia before Panama and is situated around 2 hours from Capurganá on foot or 25 minutes by boat. Here you’ll find some excellent snorkelling options and the 2 best beaches in the area: La Miel and Playa Soledad.

Though tough to get to (you can only get there on speedboat or via some rather sporadic flights), Capurganá and Sapzurro offer plenty to interest you for days. Enjoy beaches? There are pristine Caribbean beaches just for yourself. Enjoy diving? The diving is better than Taganga or Cartagena. Enjoy hikking? There are some great hikes along the coast or in the jungle around. As for cocktails? They’re strong.

Hike to El Cielo, CapurganaIn Capurganá, outside of the main beach, attractions are the nearby jungle hikes. One excellent trip is to the Eco Reserve El Cielo, it includes rivers crossings,  waterfalls and natural pools. On the way, you are likely to meet with local howler monkeys, toucans and parrots. You can also go to El Cielo by horse. Another good hike is to the village Aguacate, it is a one hour walk along the coast with lovely empty beaches.

Sapzurro has 2 beautiful beaches : Playa Blanca, near the village called Playa Blanca near La Miel, and Playa Soledad. Playa Blanca is only a few minutes walk from Sapzurro. To go to Playa Soledad, you usually need to organise a hike (3 hours) to get there.

=> Both beaches are located in Panama, don't forget to bring your IDs for the military checkpoint.

Diving in Capurganá and Sapzurro is a must if you arrive in season (May to November). There are over 70 places to enjoy diving, and the area’s brightly coloured fish and underwater wildlife are unforgettable. Some of the best spots include Cabo Tiburon, Punta del Faro and Bahia Sapzurro.

A good address is Dive and Green in front of the pier in Capurganá. They offer PADI classes as well as snorkelling tours. (http://www.diveandgreen.com).

La Playona is a beach located 23 kms away from Capurganá. Go there between April and June and witness the incredible ‘spawning of the cana’, which is the world’s largest turtle.
