Fauna and Flora Lost City

A trip to the Lost City gives you access to the unique fauna and flora of the Sierra Nevada near Parque Tayrona.

There are a lot of endemic species and, if you're lucky, you might spot a jaguar or even see the Sierra Nevada Tiger, more on that legend featured on the right of the page.

Animals include mountain crabs, various snakes, frogs and toads (free concerts every night), endemic birds, scorpions, pumas, leopards, linxes, monkeys and more. Plants include the coca plant, avocado trees, guava trees, and the infamous borachero plant (the local version of GHB) - a plant that has been used to drug tourists.

Did you know?

The Lost Tigers

A few years back, the Zoo of Barranquilla was touring the region and a truck carrying African tigers crashed. The tigers ran away and the locals say they managed to acclimatize and reproduce on the hospitable slopes of the Santa Marta mountains!

We could not find out if this is a legend or based on true events but hey what a story to tell. Watch out and let us know if you see the Santa Marta tigers.

Lost City - The Enemy!

You might think that Snakes, Pumas, Scorpions or even Tigers are the dangerous ones on your way to Ciudad Perdida, but don't be fooled... your worst enemy there will be... THE MOSQUITO!

In the Lost City, the vicious insect won't bite you, it will literally pump liters of blood out of your body, leave you 100s of stings that will wake you up in the middle of the night in terrible pain. And as a beautiful goodbye gift, your legs, feet and arms will wear ugly scars that will take weeks to go away.

So, as a flamethrower might be a little heavy to put in your bag, you will have to find the right repellent and never EVER leave parts of your body unprotected.
