Popayán Attractions and Visits

Any visit to Popayán should include a walk in the city center. Here is an itinirary you might want to follow.

Your starting point is the beautiful Dann Monasterio hotel. Leave the hotel on your left and head towards the Baroque Style Iglesia San Francisco and its beautiful plaza.

Then, continue straight on Calle 4 for 4 blocks towards the center until you get to the beautiful Iglesia Santo Domingo. Go back a bit on Calle 4 and take Carrera 6, it will lead you to the main square of Popayán, which includes Caldas Park and the Clock Tower as well as the beautiful Cathedral Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.

Moving on, you stay on Calle 5 and head towards the hill. On your way, visit the the oldest church in Popayán, La Ermita. Keep going in Calle 5 and start the climb to the Iglesia de Belén to enjoy a panoramic view of the city.

Going down, go slightly on your right to catch Carrera 1AE that leads to Calle 4E and then Calle 4. On your right you will notice the Casa de Teatro de Popayán. Once you get at the intersection of Calle 4 and Carrera 3, turn on your right to reach Calle 3. Turn left on Calle 3 with the Palacio de la Justicia on your left. Stay on Calle 3 until you get to Carrera 7 and at the intersection admire the architecture of the beautiful Teatro Valencia.

Nice atmosphere near Puente Humilladero

Go bak on Calle 3 to Carrera 6 to check the modern building of the Biblioteca de la Republica, visit the Museo Nacional Guillermo Valencia or enjoy the nice atmosphere around the famous Puente del Humilladero. If you're hungry, enjoy the local "empanadas de Pipian" at nearby pastry shop Las Abuelas.

If you had't had enough, cross the bridge and head towards the hill with the big staue on it, El Morro de Tulcán. At the bottom of the hill, before you start the climb, check Rincón Payanés, which has scale models of the city's landmark.

=> It's a good idea to go to El Morro near the end of the day to enjoy the sunset over the roofs of Popayán.
