Colombian Coffee

Colombia is the third largest producer of coffee in the world and its bean is famous for being the softer. The national brand Juan Valdez is nowadays one of the most recognized worldwide, so bringing home a couple of bags of gourmet coffee will make look good with everyone.

Coffee is produced in many places in Colombia and, although the Coffee Zone is the traditional area, in the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta they also sow very good organic coffee.

Arhuacas’ Bags

A few years ago the arhuacas’ bags became fashionable and now you can find them in almost every handcraft and souvenirs chop of Colombia.

They have been used traditionally by the indigenous people if the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, so if you’re travelling through that region, don´t be surprised if you see most people wearing one. Formerly, they were made with sheep wool or a natural fiber, but nowadays they are also made with synthetic or cotton.

The designs represent the ancestral world view of the communities and the fabrication of these bags can last up to 8 months, so the prices can be very high.

Sombrero Vueltiao (Vuletiao Hat)

The "vueltiao hat" is typical from the east of the Caribbean Coast and its original color was cream, characteristic of the natural fiber of the palm used for its production.

One of the main characteristics of this hat is that it has a special way of rolling up or “voltearse” so that it can be stored in a cylindrical case made of the same fiber. In this way, you can take it everywhere and maintain it in a good condition.

Wayuu Handcrafts

The Wayuu Indigenous communities inhabit the Caribbean Coast of Colombia, specifically the region of La Guajira. Their hand crafts are distinguished for its strong colors, different styles of knitting and amazing designs which represents their culture and world view.

The most common pieces are bags, hammocks, bracelets and small representations of their dresses. Even Though you can find Wayuu bags and hammocks all around the country, the most traditional elements are only available in La Guajira.

Traditional Sweets

Colombians are incredible sweet lovers, so don´t be surprised if you find locals selling all kinds of candies in every corner.  

Most of the use arequipe (a common sweet made of sugar and milk and mix it with other ingredients as coconut, fig, cookies, peanut and guava sweet.

Handcrafts of “mola”

This kind of handcrafts is typical of the Antioquia region. They are traditionally made by the women of the Kuna Indigenous communities and every design, mostly anthropomorphic and zoomorphic, are unique.   

One of the main characteristics of these fabrics are the use of many colors and, nowadays they’re used in different decorative pieces, garments and accessories like bags, wallets, shoes, cloth, etc.

Jewelry and emeralds

Colombia is the world’s main producer of emeralds and they’re mostly found in the Department of Boyacá. In Bogotá, generally in the center of the city, there is an important commerce area where you can find this precious stone and jewelries that use it in beautiful designs.

The price for one of this is very high, so if you can’t afford an emerald, Colombia offers other amazing options. Jewelry made of gold with pre-Columbian designs is also traditional and beautiful, as well as the filigree technique in silver famous of Mompox.
