Women Travellers

Travelling alone can be as daunting as it is liberating, especially as a female since often the advice against your adventure is stronger and, arguably, the risks you take greater.

Woman Travelling alone ColombiaWomen travellers in Colombia generally are unlikely to find themselves in trouble. Obviously, it’s not possible to guarantee a person’s safety anywhere, but we’re confident in saying that Colombia is as safe as many more popular destinations in South America.

=> You might find men direct, but equally casual conversation or a dance isn’t normal assumed to be the pretext for something more.

Colombia can be considered a ‘macho’ country, yet women are well-represented in higher power positions (although clearly, as with many places in the world, there’s work to be done). There are many women in high power positions, and politicians such as Gina Parody are not far away from taking the top jobs.

Clearly apply the usual precautions. Try to blend in (although if you’re blonde you’ll find this tough, and also attract a fair amount of attention), try to pick up a little Spanish, and talk to locals to find out where are the no-go areas.

Taxis, when taken at night, should be called in advance rather than hailed from the street. At night, especially if you stand out as a foreigner, try to go out in a group and try not to get lost from the group. Don’t accept drinks from anyone you don’t know and trust. Don’t advertise your valuables.

Be smart and you’ll be safe. Women travelers in Colombia, from what we’ve heard, encounter very few problems specifically related to them being female. Petty-theft isn’t uncommon, but it’s something you can guard against. The real issue here isn’t being a solo woman traveller... It’s being a solo traveller, which requires you to take extra care wherever you are.
